Academic Advice for Students Going on Jr. in Mexico/Spain (or other study abroad programs)
1. All students engaged in study abroad, whether through Rutgers or other institutions, must consult with a Departmental Study Abroad advisor before leaving and upon return.
2. No 200-level courses may be taken upon return under any circumstances.
3. Students who complete 400-level literature courses are not required to complete the 300-level literature requirement for that specific area. If, for example, students have completed a 400-level literature course on modern Spanish literature, students are not required to take 335-336 upon return. Similarly, if students have completed a 400-level literature course in contemporary Latin American literature, students are not required to take 333-334. Students should complete the 300-level literature requirement for those areas in which they have not completed a 400-level literature course.
4. Culture courses may be accepted as equivalents of 300-level literature courses or 300-level electives if they contain literary content. Courses on art, history, anthropology, etc. are counted as courses in those disciplines, not as literature courses. Consequently, they do not count toward the Spanish/Portuguese major or minor.
5. Courses that have linguistic content, such as bilingualism, dialectology, sociolinguistics, history of the language, count as equivalents of 361,362,363,364 or the appropriate 400-level linguistic course.
6. Only courses on the Hispanic/Portuguese language, linguistics, literature and culture/civilization may count in the Spanish/Portuguese major or minor.
7. Students will not receive degree credit twice for the same course. (Example: if students have had Cervantes here, they do not take Cervantes there. If students take the Generation of 1898 there, they do not take the equivalent here. Spanish III and Spanish IV at the University of the Yucatan in Mexico, for example, are more or less on the level of our 325, 326 courses. If students have had all three grammar/composition courses here, (201 or 203, 202 or 204, 325, 326) they should not take more general grammar/composition courses in Mexico or Spain or elsewhere.
8. All returning students must take a minimum of one 300 or 400-level course upon returning to Rutgers. Any exceptions to this policy must be approved by a Study Abroad advisor, preferably before students leave for study abroad.
9. If students have any questions while they are away regarding course credit, course equivalency or required courses in particular programs that the Director cannot answer, they should not hesitate to write to the Department for advice. You may also e-mail the department at
