CONCERT: GRACIAS A LA VIDA: A Celebration of the Life & Music of Violeta Parra
Violeta Parra (1917-1967) was a Chilean poet, songwriter, folklorist and visual artist. With songs such as Gracias a La Vida, Volver a los Diecisiete, and Mambru Se Fue a La Guerra, she pioneered the "Chilean New Song"—a renewal and a reinvention of Chilean folk music which would extend its sphere of influence outside Chile— becoming acknowledged as the Mother of Latin American Folk. Celebrating the centennial of her birth, this concert presents an offering of new works inspired by Violeta Parra’s life and music, and performed by the renown ALTURAS DUO—Carlos Boltes (viola & charango) and Scott Hill (classical guitar)—and the French pianist and singer Alexandra Aubert. Considered one of the most engaging chamber ensembles, Alturas Duo performs classical & South American folk music. They are recipient of a Chamber Music America/ASCAP Adventurous Programming Award and have been hailed as playing with "marvelous virtuosity" by The Washington Post.
