FILM: Understanding the Peace Process in Colombia: Screening and Discussion of Port of Destiny: Peace
In recognition of International Day of Peace, Rutgers Global and its university partners present a film screening and discussion of Port of Destiny: Peace, a documentary about the peace process in Colombia. In November 2016, a peace agreement was reached between the Colombian government of President Juan Manuel Santos and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia – People’s Army (FARC-EP), the oldest Marxist guerrilla group in Latin America, putting an end to the 53‐year‐old armed conflict. Port of Destiny: Peace narrates the story of Juan Manuel Santos’ path to establishing peace in his country: as Defense Minister, he waged war on FARC; as President, he brokered peace—but paid a steep political price. After the screening, three Rutgers faculty—Ulla Berg, Janice Gallagher, and Linda Stamato—will engage in conversation about the challenges of brokering peace in Colombia and elsewhere around the globe.
