We're deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of our dear colleague Irma Sanchez, a PhD alumna and part-time lecturer in our department. Irma passed away peacefully on August 4th, surrounded by her loving family, after a brief illness.
Irma joined the department as a Ph.D. student and earned her degree in Spanish Literature in 2018. Her research focused on Latin American economic narratives and literary journalism, and her dissertation, directed by Prof. Marcy Schwartz, offered a bold interdisciplinary exploration of Venezuela's evolving identity. Irma taught for the department for 19 years, and also held teaching positions at Montclair State University and Kean University. We will dearly miss her, and we feel truly grateful to have had such a wonderful educator with us.
A memorial service will be held on August 16 at 11:00 AM, at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church (28 Livingston Avenue, Roseland, NJ 07068).
Contributions may be made to the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation in lieu of flowers.
