María Montenegro is a Lecturer in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Rutgers University, specializing in Spanish for the health professions. Her teaching and research focus on the intersections of language, culture, and healthcare, with particular attention to improving access to culturally and linguistically appropriate services for Spanish-speaking communities. She has extensive experience in curriculum development, community-engaged learning, and interdisciplinary projects that connect language education with public health. At Rutgers, she teaches courses designed to prepare students in health-related fields to engage with Spanish-speaking patients and communities through both linguistic and cultural competence.
