Welcome to the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Rutgers University-New Brunswick. We’re excited to have you explore our dynamic programs, which span both undergraduate and graduate levels in Spanish and Portuguese language, literature, culture, and more. Our faculty members are passionate educators and active participants in various university initiatives, including Comparative Literature, Cinema Studies, Latino and Caribbean Studies, and the Center for Latin American Studies, among others. These interdisciplinary connections offer students a well-rounded understanding of the cultural, literary, and linguistic diversity of the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking world.

By studying Spanish and Portuguese, our students engage in meaningful work that fosters understanding and collaboration across cultures. The Department of Spanish and Portuguese has a strong tradition of academic excellence, offering a range of programs designed to inspire and challenge students. From introductory courses in language proficiency to advanced studies in linguistics and literature, our courses cater to all levels of undergraduate learners. We also offer graduate programs including an M.A. in Teaching and Translation & Interpreting, and a Ph.D. with a focus on Bilingualism & Second Language Acquisition as well as Latin American, Iberian, and Luso-Afro-Brazilian literatures and cultures.
In addition to our rigorous academic programs, we offer unique opportunities to engage with the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking world through study abroad programs in Spain and Portugal, where students can earn credits while immersing themselves in the culture.
