
Cátedra Três Marias for the Study of Portuguese and Luso-Afro-Brazilian Cultures in partnership with FLAD and Camões Institute
The Cátedra Três Marias for the Study of Portuguese and Luso-Afro-Brazilian Cultures is a research and programming platform of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Rutgers University–New Brunswick, inaugurated in partnership with the Instituto Camões and theFundação Luso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento (FLAD), and dedicated to the critical study of Portuguese and Lusophone cultures across their global diasporic formations.
Três Marias supports scholarly exchange, public programming, and collaborative research connecting Rutgers University to Portugal, Brazil, Cabo Verde, Angola, Mozambique, São Tomé e Príncipe, and Lusophone communities worldwide. Under the direction of Professor Daniel da Silva, the Cátedra organizes lectures, symposia, and community engagement that bring scholars, artists, and public intellectuals to Rutgers, and support our students and researchers in their study of Portuguese and the Lusophone world.
Três Marias administers a portfolio of scholarships and grants awarded each Spring. Undergraduate students with a declared Minor in Portuguese are eligible for scholarships of up to $500.
Students who Minor or Major in Portuguese and participate in our month-long summer Study Abroad program in Lisbon, Portugal—applying, gaining admission, and successfully completing the program's credit courses—may apply for Study Abroad grants ranging from $1,000 to $2,500.
Graduate researchers and doctoral candidates whose thesis or dissertation work centers or substantially engages Luso-Afro-Brazilian cultures are eligible for research grants of up to $3,000.
