Minor Information - Portuguese
Minor Requirements
A minor in Portuguese consists of 18 credits (six courses) taught in Portuguese with a grade of C or better in each course. Of the 18 credits, nine (9) credits must be in literature. The student's entire course of study must be approved by a departmental advisor.

Note on Minor in African Area Studies
Note on the Minor in African Area Studies
The following courses count toward the Minor in African Area Studies. If a student takes all three, plus three other courses on Africa, he or she may minor in African Area Studies with a concentration on Lusophone Africa.
01:810:309 AFRICA AND PORTUGAL: AN INTRODUCTION (3)
Prerequisite 01:810:201 or 203, or placement exam, or permission of department.
Discussion of significant historical, social, and cultural trends in Portugal and Lusophone Africa.
01:810:350 LITERATURES AND CULTURES OF LUSOPHONE AFRICA (3)
Prerequisite: 01:810:315 or 316 or permission of department.
Study of the literatures from African countries whose official language is Portuguese: Mozambique, Angola, Cape Verde, Guiné-Bissau and São Tomé and Príncipe. Emphasis on 20th century colonial and post-independence literature and theory.
01:810:440 THE PORTUGUESE-SPEAKING WORLD: MULTIPLE PERSPECTIVES (3)
Prerequisite: One term of 300-level literature in Portuguese or permission of department.
Study of Portuguese expansion and colonialism in Africa and Brazil from 15th to the 19th century. Reading include: Pero Vaz de Caminha, Zurara, João de Barros, Valentin Fernández, Luis de Camões, etc.
