Prerequisite: Fluency in another Romance language and knowledge of its grammar, or permission of department. Credit not given for this course and 01:810:102, and 132.  Not open to students who have taken Portuguese courses at a higher level.

Intensive study of Portuguese, especially as it contrasts to Spanish and other Romance languages. Practice of specific areas of grammar, linguistic structure, style, and literary analysis. Selected readings of modern authors with composition and class discussions.

Course learning goals:

  • This is an introductory course for students with no previous study of Portuguese. The course is designed to introduce the basics of the language through readings in a variety of fields
  • The main purpose of the course is to assist students in the beginner level of Portuguese, emphasizing basic language skills, listening, speaking, reading and writing.
  • The course introduces students to the Brazilian culture through a variety of mediums such as readings, movies, music, and videos
  • Engage in interactive activities, participate in group projects to practice greetings, vocabulary and grammar structures
  • Acquire a basic level vocabulary in the targeted language

Course learning goals:

  • Continuing proficiency- based course, which develops communicative abilities in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in culturally authentic contexts
  • Express the following language functions: Greetings, description of people, animals and domestic space and habits.
  • Demonstrate the skills to communicate through phone and e-mail, request information, ask for assistance, give and receive directions.
  • Express ideas clearly when narrating daily routines at a basic level
  • Write simple texts using the tenses learned up to this stage.
  • Know about cultures and customs of Portuguese-speaking countries
  • Communicate at elementary level in Portuguese in a variety of contexts such as simple ideas about family, study, work, daily routines, leisure activities, houses, furniture, chores, and health

Course learning goals:

  • The course focuses on all four language skills: listening, reading, writing, speaking, with increasing emphasis on speaking.
  • It concentrates on aspects of the Portuguese language as pronunciation, vocabulary, idioms, and grammatical structures particular to Portuguese, developing some basic communicative skills.
