SPANISH FOR BUSINESS I
Spanish for Business is an on-line course designed for students interested in the field of business who have an intermediate - low to mid - level of proficiency in Spanish (native and heritage speakers or those with at least two years of college-level Spanish). A variety of interpretive, interpersonal and presentational activities familiarize students with terminology, cultural products, practices and perspectives involved in doing business in the Spanish speaking world.
The course also provides the opportunity to: explore several business fields in which Spanish may be useful; understand and carry out the steps needed to manage a project; carry out the process of looking for a job; responding to an offer; interviewing and spending the first day in the office. Students are expected to participate in all online activities.
Weekly lessons and assignments will focus on acquisition of vocabulary and knowledge of the Spanish-speaking business world, use of appropriate grammar, and interpersonal communication. Lessons, assignments and quizzes will be completed weekly in an asynchronous manner. Personal interviews and office hours will be synchronous and scheduled by agreement between the student and the professor.
*This course does not count towards the Spanish major or minor.
Prerequisite:
Successful completion of 940: 132. Students that have placed out of 132 can take the class. Please note that the class cannot be used to fulfill minor or major requirements.
Learning Goals:
In accordance with our Department Learning Goals, http://span-port.rutgers.edu/learning-goals, students in this course will improve their interpretive, interpersonal and presentational skills.
They will be exposed to a large quantity of information from a variety of sources and will be able to demonstrate their progress through oral and written exercises. Emphasis on much needed business and cultural “tools” – like the use of “usted” and proper verb forms – will prepare students to participate in international business settings.
Method of Evaluation:
The student will be graded in the following areas:
- Active participation and interaction with classmates
- Completion of assignments and exercises
- Production of one Multimedia Advertisement
- Oral production (two interviews, elevator pitch, recordings, etc.)
- Written production (letters, blogs, forum, personal profile)
- Three vocabulary and grammar quizzes
Required Texts:
No official book is required, but readings will be assigned from newspapers, journals, financial and business books and on-line sources. Multi-media sources will be included as part of the lessons.

Continued study of specific areas of Spanish grammar through translation and compositions. Development of reading skills and vocabulary building through newspapers and magazines.

On-line course for those working or planning to work in the medical field. Designed for students with a basic knowledge of Spanish (native and heritage speakers or those with at least one year of college-level Spanish). Begins with a review of basic Spanish grammar.

Course Learning Goals:
Students renrolled in this course will build upon their prior study of the Spanish language in the written and spoken modes of communication, they will further develop their comptency with respect to:
- Communicative abilities of spoken Spanish, and will demonstrate their understanding of central themes and relevant details in various contexts
- Speaking skills to converse with native speakers and and others for whom Spanish is a second language. Students will enhance their ability to speak on a wide range of themes, with increased grammatical accuracy, using varied verb tenses and moods.
- Writing communicative skills in both formal and informal contexts, with special emphasison precise, grammatically accurate description and narration in the past.
- Reading skills from a selection of original texts, from a variety of genres, that deal with contemporary themes from different cultural sources from the Spanish-speaking world. At the same time, students will critical abilities to discuss those texts in both the written and spoken modes of communication.
