Undergraduate Advising

A note from the Undergraduate Director

Otero Torres

Dear Students,

Daylight savings time just ended this past weekend which means that is time to start thinking about registration for the Spring semester. For most students’ registration opened today, November 7. It is time to start thinking about making informed decisions for the semester ahead. As your Undergraduate Director in Spanport, I will be available to answer your questions in person and via ZOOM. I am always available to clarify any information or doubts you may have. No question is unimportant in our community. Please do not rely on your peers for academic information. Your friends may have the best intentions to help you navigate through courses options and other concerns you may have, but this information is often incomplete and inaccurate. Every student profile is different, I have access to your academic record and will discuss your academic progress in an expedient and detailed way with you. My priority is that our students make informed decisions regarding their academic choices.

Please avail yourself of the opportunity to stop by my office for support in choosing your classes, 5160 AB (West). I will gladly chat with you about class offerings, special permission numbers, overrides, study abroad, major and minor declaration, or any other academic concern, If you cannot make my office hours, please send me a detailed e-mail to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. Please do not leave a phone message. Be sure to include your RUID or net ID, so I can access your record. I will answer your questions within 24 hours. If you send me an e-mail after 4:30 on Fridays, I will reply to your message on Monday.

Be sure to familiarize yourself with important deadlines for your academic progress. If you have not taken the placement exam, now is the time to take it. Our Program in Salamanca will be running this summer after a long hiatus, be sure to inquire details by sending an email to my assistant Jerlene at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Our department is excited to join SAS in its celebration of the Year of Languages. As part of these activities, our creative group Metáfora will be offering workshops open to all. Our next one will take place on Monday, November 28 from 6-8 pm in our Department, 5th floor AB (West). All are welcome!
