Spanish Language Program
Our Spanish course sequence is designed so that each course builds on the previous one, following the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines, and supporting students as they progress from the Novice levels toward Intermediate Mid. Across courses, we use task-based language teaching with a strong emphasis on orality—students develop their ability to understand, interact, and present in Spanish through meaningful, real-world communication.
01:940:101 Elementary Spanish I (4 credits): Introduces communicative tasks around introductions; life on campus and studying in university; family and friends; hobbies and activities; vacation.
01:940:102 Elementary Spanish II (4 credits): Builds on 101 through themes like routines, city life, food and health, and careers.
01:940:121 Spanish Review and Continuation (3 credits): An intensive course that combines key objectives and content from the first two semesters.
01:940:131 Intermediate Spanish I (4 credits): Develops communication skills around wellbeing, relationships, community issues, and the job market.
01:940:132 Intermediate Spanish II (4 credits): Strengthens sustained speaking and presenting through topics like sustainable travel, education, business, and art and technology.
A key feature of our program is that we create our materials in-house, specifically for our Rutgers context, so the content feels relevant to students’ lives and interests, and all materials are free. We offer online sections (101, 102, 131, 132) for students who need flexibility (work schedules, commuting, competing responsibilities) and in-person sections (101, 121, 131, 132) for students who benefit from regular face-to-face interaction and a classroom community. The program is taught by an excellent team of instructors and coordinated by two supervisors, an assistant director, and the program director, which helps us maintain consistency, support instructors, and keep the student experience strong across courses and modalities.
